They're planning on playing Berkman every day in the OF. Doesn't seem like a great idea. He doesn't have an inning away from 1B since 2007. As long as he keeps getting on base his bat has value, but I can't see him being anything better than awful in the outfield at this point.

I like the move from an offensive standpoint, provided Berkman can bounce back, far from a sure thing. It puts a predominately left handed bat between Pujols and Holliday. But an outfield of Berkman, Rasmus, and Holliday seems weak at best defensively. I can't wait to see Berkman patrolling left field at PNC.

What's it matter where he plays, since our guys won't be able to hit the Card's pitching??

Let's see, a small market team that has set, and is still working on, the all-time record for ineptitude, and a player chooses to play somewhere else. Very suspicious. Sounds as if MLB has it in for the Pirates the same as the NFL is out to get the Steelers.

Get real! The Pirates need to pull their heads out of their collective arses. "Competitive offers" and "internal value calculations" are worthless for this bunch. To get out of the hole the Pirates are eventually going to have to bite the bullet and overpay. They are simply going to have to BUY some players at some point or be mired in mediocrity forever. Perhaps this isn't the year to do it, but it must be done at some point.

Someone help me out here please - who did STL receive from SD for Ryan Ludwick? Supposedly, STL was able to trade Ludwick because Jon Jay was ready to takeover in RF for him. Now STL signs Berkman to play LF and will move Holliday to RF. This is going to weaken the OF defense measurably compared to having Jay in RF. How much more (if any) will Berkman produce than Ludwick and for how much more money?

July 31, 2010: Traded as part of a 3-team trade by the St. Louis Cardinals to the San Diego Padres. The San Diego Padres sent Corey Kluber (minors) to the Cleveland Indians. The San Diego Padres sent Nick Greenwood (minors) to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cleveland Indians sent Jake Westbrook to the St. Louis Cardinals.

No...not really. Baseball has evolved and the teams that can hit and pitch are the teams that win. Building your team around defense and small ball is a losing proposition. Especially in the AL but it still applies in the NL. Give me a team that can hit v a team that plays good defense any day.
