This is such a head scratcher, and the kind of move I would NOT want to see the Pirates make.

No Strasburg for another year, no Bryce Harper for a year maybe more.

Werth could be regretting this one down the road.

The players union should erect a gold life size statue to Boras at their headquarters.....and the players should bow to it every day.

The Werth contract has had an impact of an 8.0 earthquake. Rival gms, execs are going nuts about the terms.

Do we really want to compete with the Nationals though? We're talking about a team that finished with 69 wins.

Here's some perspective on tbhe Nats and how overrated I've seen their GM Mike Rizzo be.

The Nats had a $61 million Opening Day payroll and they finished the season in last place with just 69 wins. Dave Littlefield accomplished obtaining more wins on less payroll during some of the seasons he was here.

2010 Nats paid $884,057 per win
2010 Pirates paid $635,327 per win

Someone got better value per win last season and it wasn't the Washington Nationals. Now, granted value doesn't matter to teamsin huge/large markets like New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Houston, Dallas/Arlington/Texas, St.Louis, Atlanta. When it comes to smaller and mid sized markets that are crunched regionally in regards to market and population like the Nats or Pirates, value is very important. The Nats didn't get much return on their $61 million investment last season.

Now this offseasonyou see people drooling all over the Nats signing Jayson Werth. I've seen comments where people question why the Pirates can't do this while ignoring that the Nats haven't exactly shown any ability to win much more than the Pirates or spend their money wisely (having money doesn't mean **** when you have garbage GM's that can't spend it well).

Jayson Werth was signed to replace Adam Dunn's production for the Nats. Now, Werth doesn't have Dunn's po9wer but he hits better but more importantly is that this signing really just offsets a piece from the 2010 Nats roster and production which grabbed a 69 win season. To make things worse, Werth is going to cost the Nats about $5 million per season MORE than Dunn did last season and for similar production.

I saw this signing by the Nats as nothing more than them spending $17 million per season to prevent themselves from regressing on a 69 win season more than I see it as an actual improvement to their team.

Are you out of your mind? Werth and Boras just flat out raped the Washington Nationals. no way is Werth worth (no pun intended lol) that kind of money to a team that's going nowhere at least this year. Maybe to a team that is on the brink of truly competing for the division or a wildcare I can see the value in Werth but this for the Nats was all about replacing Adam Dunn's production and preventing their 2011 season from being worse than the 2010 last place finish of 69 wins.

This is a fantastic deal for a 32 year old player like Werth who will be no where near the value of his contract in a couple of eyars production wise.

I saw Sandy Alderson pretty much blast this signing

"It makes some of our contracts look pretty good," new Mets GM Sandy Alderson said, mocking the Nationals and perhaps his predecessor, Omar Minaya.

"That's a long time and a lot of money. I thought they were trying to reduce the deficit in Washington, D.C."
From Alderson's perspective, the Nationals negated any advantage they might have gained by signing Werth when Adam Dunn signed with the White Sox.

"They lost Adam Dunn and replaced him with Jayson Werth," Alderson said. "I'm sure they feel they are better today than they were at the end of last season. They may be, but they did lose Adam Dunn, so that somewhat offsets the benefit they will get from Jayson."

Financially it's a great deal for Werth.

If he wants to win. It's a horrendous deal. I have to imagine it's going to get pretty frustrating for a guy who used to the playoffs every year.

With a ring, some WS visits, time in the playoffs at his age of 31-32... it's all about cashing out now and providing himself and his family a safety net financially than the ultimate goal of winning. Werth had choices to signj with better teams, he wasn't choosing the Nats based on theior prospects of being good. they just dished him out the most loot

The Nationals offer was reportedly so far out of line with the other offers Werth was getting that Boras didn't even call the other teams who were interested to see if they could match it. That's when you know you've offered too much.

The Phillies offer was for 3 years and $48 million with a 4th year vesting option.
