Default Pirates to trade for Kawakami?

Dejan is reporting multiple rumors of the Bucs interest in Kenshin Kawakami.

    An excerpt from Dejan's blog:

"...Kawakami, 35, had some Charlie Morton-like numbers this past season at 1-10 with a 5.15 ERA, and opponents batted .284 against him. Those who saw him regularly are adamant -- passionate, actually -- that he is a better pitcher than that, and Kawakami did, in fact, have a 3.86 ERA over 25 starts in 2009."

Braves seek bullpen help at Winter Meetings
    By Mark Bowman / MLB.com | 11/29/10 10:00 PM EST

.....With the possibility that he might not be able to get another Major League or Japanese club to eat a portion of Kenshin Kawakami's salary, Atlanta's GM heads to the Winter Meetings with approximately $5 million to spend.

.......With the baseball world coming together once again for these Winter Meetings, Wren will continue to gauge the interest other clubs have in Kawakami. Major League clubs haven't shown overwhelming interest in him, and those that have haven't been willing to assume a respectable portion of the $6.67 million he is owed this year.

The Braves felt like they had a match with a Japanese club that was willing to provide close to $3 million in return for Kawakami. But the 34-year-old pitcher has said that he wants to remain in the United States to take advantage of at least one last chance to prove he can be effective in the Majors.

When Kawakami was sent to Triple-A Gwinnett for the month of August, he was able to continue living in his suburban Atlanta mansion, which is located just a few minutes from Gwinnett's stadium. This luxury might not be present if he returns to the Braves next year.

Once Kawakami passed through waivers earlier this month, Atlanta optioned him to its Double-A Mississippi roster.
