    Default Winter Meetings Rumors

I regret that I started the separate Kawakami thread. Maybe we can gather all of the winter meetings rumors in one thread. There are a lot going around.

Here are some from Dejan and Langosch and others:

    - Pirates are about to sign Scott Olsen

    - Pirates are interested in trading for Kawakami

    - Pirates are interested in Jeremy Accardo. "UPDATE 4:15 p.m.: Let me update this with stronger language. The Pirates are strongly pursuing Accardo." (Dejan)

    "Pirates Rumors: Accardo, Duchscherer, Kawakami
By Tim Dierkes [December 6 at 3:25pm CST]
3:25pm: The Pirates are aggressively pursuing Accardo, according to Kovacevic (on Twitter).

2:51pm: The latest on the Pirates:

The Pirates are deeply interested in Jeremy Accardo, reports Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The Dodgers are also known to be in on the recently non-tendered reliever.
A couple of teams have approached the Pirates about center fielder Andrew McCutchen, tweets ESPN's Gordon Edes, but they'd have to be overwhelmed.
The Pirates and Justin Duchscherer have mutual interest, reports Kovacevic.
The Pirates have shown some interest in Braves starter Kenshin Kawakami, reports MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch. She estimates Kawakami would only cost the Pirates $1-2MM and no significant players, as the Braves are just looking to unload part of his $6.667MM salary.
Langosch says the Pirates have mild interest in Cardinals shortstop Brendan Ryan. Kovacevic says the Pirates continue to discuss shortstops with many teams, including J.J. Hardy with the Twins.
Kovacevic adds that the Pirates would love to trade Ryan Doumit. He says they'd only trade Evan Meek or Joel Hanrahan for a very significant return."

Ken Rosenthal says the Pirates are pursuing Kevin Correia. He's a decent bet to bounce back this year and shouldn't be all that expensive. Might not be a bad signing.

I hope they get them all and i wouldn't be upset, if they get jack Wilson back, assuming he could pass a physical exam.

    Dejan's summary for the day:

"The Pirates are eager to trade catcher/outfielder Ryan Doumit, are close to signing free-agent pitcher Scott Olsen, are pursuing free-agent pitcher Jeremy Accardo, could trade for veteran Atlanta starter Kenshin Kawakami and continue to have many other discussions....."

    ecember 6th, 2010
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Some highlights from GM Neal Huntington’s late-afternoon media confab on the first day of the Winter Meetings:

General impressions: “It’s a lot like the first day of the Winter Meetings always — a lot of conversations, some lead to dead ends and other lead to things coming to fruition. A lot of dialogue.”

Whether the Pirates are open to trading prospects to fill needs for 2011: “We’re open to the right deal. In a perfect world, we’d like to hold on to every prospect we have. But we know that in order to get good players that are the right fit, it’s going to take us some players in return.”

On trade interest for Joel Hanrahan and Evan Meek: “We like both guys a lot. We think both are capable of closing at the major league level and we’re looking for value in return.”

Which one is the closer? ”The tough part is, it’s not going to be a spring training competition because you can’t ever really compare (outings). One guy may face somebody’s A ball lineup and the other guy may face a big league lineup. If we do decide on one — there’s been multiple conversations between Clint (Hurdle) and I — we’ll decide before spring training. In early conversations, we’re open to continuing moving both guys, depending on how they match up, but it’s an ongoing dialogue whether we settle on one or go with both.”

Ryan Doumit’s status: “As we sit here right now, Ryan will be our right fielder with some time behind home plate to supplement Chris Snyder. Sitting here right now, Ryan’s going to play a lot. It’s up to him to play well in order to play.”

Regarding rumored trade interest in Andrew McCutchen: “I wouldn’t always believe what you read.”

I like this move a lot. I hope this kid can bounce back from a real traumatic year.

This is a good pickup...the money is ok...and Correia has ability and could be a solid mid-rotation starter.

PS: I would love to see the Pirates pickup Carlos Pena....yeah the BA sucks, but he's got sick power numbers...and I guess he's not very great in the field either. I just like his power numbers basically.

Look how f'n fast Wikipedia is....

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Correia

Kevin John Correia (born August 24, 1980 in San Diego, California) is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

After reading that, pretty sad his younger bro died.

I have heard that the Astros are taking calls on Hunter Pence...IF that is true I wonder what it would take to get him into our RF corner. HAHAHA...not gonna happen, yes I know.

Some of the reviews I've read aren't particularly positive about the Corriea signing.

As an example, Charlie at BucsDugout offers this ominous assessment:

"I think if you put the 2010 version of Duke in PETCO with the Padres' 2010 defense behind him, he would have done better than Correia did."
    http://www.bucsdugout.com/

Some others were more postive such as Pat Lackey at whygavs and Tim at PiratesProspects.

    From Dejan:

"The Pirates have at least inquired about free-agent shortstop Orlando Cabrera."

It's hard to agree with his Duke statement. Trying to go by some neutral stats:

    FIP: Duke 4.95 Correia: 4.71
    xFIP: Duke 4.48 Correia: 4.19
    tERA: Duke 5.19 Correia: 4.78

    Correia is consistently comfortably ahead.
