    Default Aki Iwamura?

Rumors popped up early today that the Rays were close to dealing Iwamura to an unknown team. I thought he'd be a nice fit here as he can play 2B pretty well and a little third if you need him to. Things are coming out slowly, but first it said it was an NL club and not the Dodgers or Cubs, now Dejan says he heard the Pirates are in serious talks. No idea what they're looking for. It looked like Iwamura was probably out in Tampa, as they didn't want to pick up his option and were willing to go forward with Zobrist or Brignac at 2B, so the asking price may have been low.

Coming from the Tampa side too now.

UPDATE, 4:16: The team the Rays are dealing Iwamura to is the Pirates. Still working on what they are going to get back, but the Pirates do have some young arms.

He's what? 30 years old or something like that. He can still hit above average and play above average defense. Definitely an upgrade over anything we presently have and provides a nice short term gap filler until Pedro arrives and they do that Laroche move to 2nd, if that's a serious idea.

What is elft on his contract?

All that's on his contract is a $4.25 million option for 2010. Beyond that he's a free agent. That's why the Rays are looking to deal him quickly. By the day after the World Series they will have to either pick up the option or buy it out.

Just looked. $4.25 million option. Definitely worth it IMO. Hopefully he's over the injury from last season. Considering that the Rays don't want his option, we shouldn't have to give up too much of any imprtance, hopefully. this trade likely is dependent on what we give up

Rob Biertempfel from the Trib says
#Pirates may close deal tonight for 2B Iwamura. Iwamura arrival would end DYoung experiment at 2B. Probably a good thing, now that Perry Hill is gone.

    Jen Langosch says
I heard earlier this week that the Pirates might be making a trade in the coming days, and now I've heard today that the only thing keeping the trade from being finalized is that the Rays are waiting until the day starts in Japan (where Iwamura is right now) so they can call the infielder and give him the news. That would mean an announcement could come as early as tonight.

There's no word on who the Pirates might give up, though the Rays are in the market for young catching and young arms, something that Pittsburgh could afford to part with. From what I've heard, it's not believed that the Pirates are going to deal away an established player, which could take closer Matt Capps out of the possibilities.
Note that Robinzon Diaz is out of options now. The Pirates seem to like Jaramillo, and next year they will either have to go forward with all 3 catchers, send JJ to the minors, or deal a catcher. Diaz might make sense here.

Diaz makes a lot of sense. I just hope that they don't give up a pitcher with decent MLB potential

Reports from ESPN and Fox Sports both say it's Iwamura for Jesse Chavez. Not sure what to think of this one. Kind of confusing actually.

That is confusing especially with the Capps rumors. You'd think if they were going to trade Capps they'd keep another power arm in Chavez, especially a fairly dependable one like Chavez that could split time closing with Hanrahan

Just talked with Jesse Chavez, who said he is, as far as he knows, still with the #Pirates.

Craziness. Should all be sorted out around 7 PM tonight when an official announcement comes.

If it is Chavez I don't know that I'm really opposed to it, although I thought we could have given up someone a bit more expendable. Of the Chavez/Meek/Hanrahan group I liked Chavez the least.

The thing with me, s the Capps rumors in regards to this. If they do indeed trade Capps, that leaves Meek and Hanrahan as the only power arms in the BP, guys that can close and possibly set up. Having Chavez in that group was nice added depth and makes trading Capps much easier.

I agree, that I would thinki they could give up someone more expendable as well. We'll have to see how this unfolds, if it really is Chavez
