LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Pirates reached agreement with free-agent starting pitcher Kevin Correia on a two-year, $8 million deal early today.

Correia, a 30-year-old right-hander, was 10-10 with a 5.40 ERA in 26 starts this past season for San Diego. For his eight-year career, he is 36-43 with a 4.57 ERA, with opponents batting .269.

This agreement, with the contract finalization pending only a physical, would be the Pirates' most prominent of the offseason to date. Correia would join left-hander Scott Olsen, who also reached agreement at these Winter Meetings, as two additions to the starting rotation.

I like the signing but make no mistake Correia is no where near a stud pitcher. At this point in time in the Pirates team development they need bodies to compete on this pitching staff and Correia fills a need. They can't go into the season with what they had before this signing. I would also love to see them sign Duchscherer.

He's solid. Not a "stud" by any means, but he'll fill out the rotation nicely.
