Steelers sign new punter to replace Sepulveda
    By: Mike Bires

    Tuesday December 7, 2010

PITTSBURGH -- The Steelers have signed Jeremy Kapinos as their new punter.

A former Penn State star, Kapinos fills the void created by the loss of Daniel Sepulveda, who suffered a knee injury Sunday night in a 13-10 win in Baltimore. Sepulveda will have surgery to repair a torn ligament on Friday.

Kapinos has played for three different NFL teams but was only a full-time punter for the Green Bay Packers last year when he punted 66 times. He has a lifetime average of 42.9 yards per punt.

Kapinos worked out for the Steelers today in a tryout that included Ricky Schmitt.

I assume that he has experience, and will be for the rest of this year for us, holding on XP's and FG's?

The Steelers signed former Penn State punter Jeremy Kapinos today to replace Daniel Sepulveda, who will have surgery Friday to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and was placed on injured reserve.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Kapinos, a three-year NFL veteran who played for the Indianapolis Colts earlier this season, “met the criteria we’re looking for” in a tryout.

The 6-foot-1, 233-pound Kapinos averaged 44.5 yards on four punts, including a long of 55 yards and placed two inside the 20-yard line for the Colts Nov. 1 against Tampa Bay. He spent four games in 2008 and all of last season with Green Bay, where he averaged 43.8 yards on 66 punts, with 15 landing inside the 20 one blocked, in 2009.

“He’s got league experience, he’s kicked in games this year and, of course, he’s no stranger to the elements, as we know that that may be a factor for us moving forward,” said Tomlin, who added that Kapinos’ ability to hold on placekicks was “an element in the equation” but not the determining factor.

Talking to some Packers fans they say Kapinos was absolutely awful last year. He had the worst net punt average in the NFL last season, and had only 15 punts inside the 20 vs. 10 touchbacks. That's an awful ratio. Also only had 7 fair catches called in 66 punt attempts. They say he just kicked a low ball with no hang time and every time they were inside the 50 his kicks would roll into the end zone.

Perfect example then of the need for the coffin corner kick.

Gotta wonder how much of that can be blamed on coverage though.

Time will tell and desperation is a stinky cologne.

He wasn't the worst "overall", and was ranked #28 out of 40 that were listed for the '09 season... The stats were accurate, though....

... FWIW, Sepulveda was ranked #25 on the same overall list last year...

Research suggests that only 12% of ACL injuries reoccur even among athletes. It would make business sense to let him go and unfortunately he hasn't lived up the hype.

I'm not really sure how the default ranking there is calculated. Most other positions will default sort based on a specific stat (QB Rating, Yards per carry, receptions, etc.), but punting doesn't sort by anything in particular.

Looking at the same page you linked and sorting by net average he's 36th on the page. He's tied with Chris Hanson (the New England punter, not the guy from To Catch a Predator). The only guys behind him are Glenn Pakulak who only played in 2 games (but somehow punted 13 times) and two kickers who each punted once all season in emergency situations.

Sepulveda was 23rd on that list, but had 29 punts inside the 20 vs. only 4 touchbacks, suggesting he may kicked on a lot of short fields and concentrated on keeping the ball out of the end zone.

Steelers Notebook: Punter Kapinos' persistence pays off -- finally

    Saturday, December 11, 2010
    By Bill Brink, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

By Week 14 of the NFL season, Jeremy Kapinos already had worked out for 12 teams. He signed with the Indianapolis Colts for one week. He came close to joining the Washington Redskins, but it didn't work out.

"You never know what it could lead to," Kapinos said. "Twelve weeks on the road, 12 different teams, different stadiums, practice facilities, met a bunch of coaches, so I've been all over the place."

After Steelers punter Daniel Sepulveda tore his anterior cruciate ligament in a 13-10 win against the Baltimore Ravens last weekend, Kapinos found a home. He worked out for the team and signed Tuesday with the Steelers.

"I had the opportunity to talk with Dan [Sepulveda] a bunch yesterday and pretty much all week," Kapinos said. "He's been very welcoming. It's unfortunate, definitely, because you never want to get work this way, but that's the reality of my situation as a journeyman."

Kapinos graduated from Penn State in 2006 as the school's leader in career punting yards and a Ray Guy Award finalist. He joined Green Bay near the end of the 2008 season and played in 16 Packers games in 2009. His experience there helped him adjust to joining the Steelers, a playoff team which may earn a first-round bye and has a chance to play deep into January.

"Last year, Green Bay was a pretty good team, and we got to go to the playoffs on the road," he said.

"Certainly, this is a little bit different. This is the Steelers. Everyone's doing a good job of making me feel welcome."

Whether or not he joined a team, all those tryouts helped him establish relationships with the teams and coaches around the league. In his line of work, those relationships could help in the future.

"Every workout I went to, I tried to do my best at," he said. "You do well at a team, they say, 'We just wanted to look at you, we got a steady guy who can punt now.' Something comes up, you can just call them and say, 'Would you mind calling this coach or that coach and help me out?' And they'll do that. These guys are really nice around the league."

    Injury update

Right tackle Flozell Adams (high ankle sprain) practiced fully Friday as did safety Troy Polamalu (Achilles) and running back Isaac Redman (ankle). Defensive tackle Steve McLendon (stinger) did not practice Friday and is out of the game Sunday.
