The thing is I don't even think they overpaid for him. He's really that good. Playing left field at Fenway seems like a huge waste, though. Anyone could play left at Fenway.

This gives the Red Sox a pretty ridiculous lineup, but it also gives the Yankees more reason to sign Cliff Lee. While they aren't guys who struggle enough that you'd think about platooning them, Crawford, Gonzalez, Ortiz, and Drew are all guys with an OPS at least 120 points lower against lefties than righties. Having Lee, CC, and Pettite waiting for a playoff (or even regular season) series would be a huge advantage.

That means the Yankees are now likely to pay more for Lee, and also that the Angels are likely to step it up for Adrian Beltre.

I am, in some ways, happy that Boston got him and not the Yankees.

I don't ever want to hear a Red Sox fan ***** about the Yankees buying players.
