Default Cliff Lee to the Phillies

According to MLB.com's Rangers writer the team has been informed that Lee is no longer considering their offer because he has an agreement with the Phillies. No word on the contract terms yet.

Finally the NL has its own version of the Yankees.

Ohh yeahhh!!! This is what happens when some average team gets hot and beats us in the postseason. We'll own the NL the few years.

Hey, good for the Phils and good for basebal actually.

Kudos to Lee for taking less money and going to a place he really just wanted to be.

    Hey Yankees, suck it:

The average annual value on the deal he got from the Phillies was actually the highest of the 3 offers. The Yankees offer was the lowest. The Phillie deal was one year shorter, though. At first everyone was making it sound like he left a ton of money on the table, but really it wasn't all that much.

The most intriguing negotiation of the hot stove season came to a stunning conclusion late Monday when Lee, 32, spurned bigger offers from the Yankees and Rangers and agreed to a five-year, guaranteed $120 million contract with the Phillies

The deal includes an "easily reachable" vesting option for a sixth year, a source said, and most likely will ensure that Lee finishes his career in a Philadelphia uniform.

Lee's deal includes a $27.5 million option that vests if he pitches 200 innings in 2015 or a total of 400 innings over the 2014-15 seasons. If the option doesn't vest, the deal includes a $12.5 million buyout.

The Yankees' final offer to Lee came in at $132 million over six years, a source said, with a $16 million player option that could have brought it to $148 million.

So with the vesting option, which needs to be triggered, just not accepted by the player, the Phils offer would be maxed at 6 years $147.5 mil. The Yankees offer included a player option for a seventh year (which no player really turns those down) to make it 7 years and $148.

So he turned down an extra year of security and guaranteed more money in the form of a player option for one less year and possibly a lot less money to play for Philly.

He turned down more guaranteed money.

The Phillies won't have to worry about scoring many runs with that rotation.

I don't see the Phillies as one of the little sisters of the poor by any means. In fact they were the fourth highest team last year.

This is just another the rich get richer, the poor get poorer scenarios. Basically, if you are a fan of one of the major beast coast oversprawled all-concrete-everywhere metroplex from Boston to DC, then hats off...your team is more than likely a shoe in for a playoff spot.

Meanwhile, the teams in the midwest get poorer.

That's such a ****load of money but... man does it help improve the Phillies pitching staff especially after the Giants won the WS based on pitching and IMO some overachieving hitting which is kinda what you want on that stage

As many know I am a Phillies fan and while I am excited about the signing, part of me just feels ****ty because of the ability of the Phillies to just buy a team.

Just buy the best players possible and screw parity
While the Pirates would be excited to have the #5 guy Joe Blanton.

Baseball is really F'd up with its financial structure...

But at least the Yankees didn't get their guys (Werth, Crawford, Lee) for once.
