    Pirates Sign Lyle Overbay
By Tim Dierkes [December 14 at 12:22pm CST]
The Pirates signed first baseman Lyle Overbay to a one-year deal, the team announced. The statement from GM Neal Huntington:

"Lyle Overbay is solid major league player and we expect him to have a positive impact on our club offensively, defensively, and in the clubhouse."

The Pirates primarily used Garrett Jones at first base in 2010, but they expressed a desire to add a right-handed hitting complement. Overbay doesn't fit that description, though Jones could pair up with new acquisition Matt Diaz in right field if Ryan Doumit is traded.

Overbay, 34 in January, hit .243/.329/.433 in 607 plate appearances for the Blue Jays this year. His performance picked up after a rough start. Overbay is represented by Octagon.

I'm not really sure about this one. At least they're not just handing Garrett Jones a full time spot, though. He hit .215/.266/.392 after the All Star Break. He'll provide better production than what the team got from 1B last year. It's probably something like a 1 win upgrade.

I guess best case scenario is he pulls an Aubrey Huff and goes nuts for at least a half season. It's unlikely, but they're similar players for their careers. At his age there's always the chance he completely falls off a cliff too.

Donut now is the odd man out. I just hope they get some value for him, but an astute GM will see that he just doesn't fit here anymore and will try to lowball NH (yea yea yea I know, he's overvalued to begin with). If not he becomes an expensive bench player.

The lineups as it stands right now vs RHP:

1-3 Tabata, Walker, 'Cutch (Not sure which will go where)
    4. Alvarez
    5. Jones
    6. Overbay
    7. Snyder/Doumit
    8. Cedeno
This looks pretty respectable given their splits vs. Righties last year.
    vs. LHP:
    1-3: 'Cutch, Walker, Tabata
    4. Diaz?
    5. Alvarez
    6. Pearce
    7. Snyder
    8. Cedeno
The top of the order looks good but we need to play small ball vs. Lefties because the lack of power other than Pedro who isn't great against southpaws anyway.

They need to stay with the platoons at 1B and RF because the two are much better than one by himself. Overbay should provide a big defensive upgrade as well.

Doumit actuall played a decent right field and held runners, with his arm, in limited action. Maybe Garret, the legend, is the odd man out? He is not going to hit more homers and his average will suck, along with less range at 1st base. Hell, I'd rather have Donut at first.

    After some thought:

These are the only types of signings we can and should do right now. No way were we players for the big guns , so we just added players who could possibly fill in until the younguns can come through.

Until all that pitching comes to fruition, I see no sense in signing the Werths, Crawfords, Lee's of the world. Even if we had signed all 3, I ain't sure we could scale .500. We'd still need pitching, at the very least. We need LOTS of talent and we need to build from the ground up.

Maybe in a couple of years, we'll have C-Sanchez, 1b-Pedro, 2b- Walker, SS-???, 3b-Rendon, OF - Tabata, Cutch and ???
Hopefully our Pitching will be some GOOD combo of Morris, Lincoln, Morton, Owens, Ohlie, McDonald, Zack Von Z, etc, etc.

Then, and ONLY THEN, will I want us to be big players in the FA market. Until then, these piddley little signings don't bother me.

I hate the FA signing period

We all have visions of sugar plums dancing in our heads... when all that can really be signed are prunes.

As long as the idea for adding Overbay and Diaz is platooning them, these are very solid moves. Overbay's splits vs. righties in 2009 was over. 900 OPS. Diaz has hit lefties consistently at over an .800 OPS. Pearce has shown a much higher OPS vs. lefties and even though Jones was .775 vs. righties last year, he was well over .1000 against righties in 2009. RF and 1B were horrible for the Pirates a year ago and Jones got too many unproductive AB's against lefties. With these platoons, RF and 1B could very well be league average or better in 2011.

Obviously any platoon becomes vulnerable to a right or lefty relief specialist in the late innings. But let's give it a chance.

Definitelty not going to be platooning Jones and Overbay Overbay can't hit lefties either.

with a proper platoon and a coaching staff willing to properly platoon, this could work with Pearce and Overbay. Jones and Diaz could work as a RF platoon as well

If the platoon isn't done and done properly this is all a waste of complete time though.

One thing that is nice about Donut in that he hits from both sides of the plate. Once you get past the starter, platooning generally doesn't work simply because you most likely force a PH situation. Not going to look up Donut's numbers from each side. I know he has more power batting left. Just saying about the flexibility that a switch hitter brings.
