    The National Football Post

The Pittsburgh Steelers auditioned CFL star wide receiver Andy Fantuz on Tuesday, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.

Fantuz is also slated to work out for the Minnesota Vikings this week.

The 6-foot-4, 221-pounder plays for the Sasketchewan Roughriders and is the first Canadian to lead the CFL in receiving in several years.

Per our source, the CFL All-Star is going to work out for several NFL teams.

This season, he caught 87 passes for 1,380 yards and six touchdowns.

For his career, Fantuz has caught 276 passes for 4,136 yards and 23 touchdowns while averaging 15 yards per catch.

Fantuz, 26, was drafted in the first round of the CFL draft with the third overall pick after a standout collegiate career at Western Ontario University.

He won the Hec Crighton Trophy as the top college player in Canada, catching 189 career passes for 4,123 yards and 41 touchdowns.

He played in the East-West Shrine game in 2006 and tried out for the Detroit Lions, but wasn't signed.

In the Grey Cup championship in 2007, he won the Most Valuable Canadian award as the Roughriders won the title.

Meanwhile, the Steelers also worked out linebacker Alex Hall, linebacker-safety Harry Coleman and wide receiver Markeee White.

Hall is a former Cleveland Browns seventh-round draft pick.

I wish they would work out offensive lineman. We are an injury away from pulling someone from the stands to suit up.

Fantuz on Steelers workout: ‘I definitely impressed’

    Mark Masters December 16, 2010 – 12:59 pm

Saskatchewan Roughriders receiver Andy Fantuz is working out for a pair of NFL teams this week. Fantuz, a Chatham, Ont. native who led the Canadian Football League in receiving yards last season, worked out with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday and will meet with the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday.

Fantuz posted a video blog to his website following the Steelers workout and talked about his experience. He spoke about the plethora of testing done by the team (‘the most extensive physical I’ve ever had’) and the quality of the team’s training facility (ping-pong table and a pool table on the premises). As for the actual workout, Fantuz thinks he wowed the coaches with his ability to catch some tough passes.

Here are the highlights from his video blog:

On why he had to do so many tests
“The NFL, they spend a lot of money on the players so one thing they want to do is get to know them as people and what type of personality they are. The other major thing is to make sure they’re healthy and they’re not going to get injured and [then] cause a lot of money that they’re not going to see anything from.

“So basically what we did is we had a three-hour physical, two different doctors, full-body X-rays, blood work, urine tests, all the stuff, it was pretty crazy so the most extensive physical I’ve ever had without a doubt.”

On the Steelers practice facility and meeting coach Mike Tomlin
“Then we got to go over to the practice facility and the Steeler office actually so we got to check out all the coaches offices, the locker room, all the treatment centre, their whole practice facility and it was impressive, let me tell you. You know, just for an example, their locker room: they had a ping-pong table and a pool table right inside the locker room, which I thought was pretty cool.

“A bunch of players were hanging out, it was their day off that day and they didn’t start practice until the next day so there were players in there getting treatment. I got to meet a few of them. I got to meet coach Tomlin, one thing about him is he is a lot bigger in person then he looks on TV. He’s a pretty big dude, but a really nice guy and overall all the people were really nice.”

    The on-field workout
“After a little tour we kind of went over to the practice facility and got changed into our workout gear. It was me and another receiver, a guy from California who has been in the arena league and the UFL and has been in training camps before in the NFL, so there were also two linebackers working out, but they kind of kept the two groups separate so it was myself and this other receiver we went over together and got warmed up and basically what they had, they had an ex-quarterback, who is currently one of their strength coaches, throwing to us and he’s got a good arm so that didn’t slow us down at all and they just kind of filmed the whole thing and they had us catching some balls and doing some voice-reaction catches and things like that.”

“And basically they just wanted to see our hands, our athletic ability, so we ran a bunch of routes, probably about 10 in total, maybe 12, just a couple out routes, curls, come backs, bang route, some fades, streaks and then some bubble screens.”

    On impressing the coaches
“They wanted to see us do some one-handed catching and I definitely impressed them with the catching. There were a few balls that they thought wouldn’t be caught and I was able to get them so I blew them away with the hands, but, you know, we’ll just see what happens. We didn’t have to do any testing as far as combine tests, 40 [yard dash], shuttle, vertical, we didn’t do any of that stuff. The only test we did basically was a height and weight test and I guess that’s pretty much it.”

    On the next steps
“The whole workout was 20 minutes probably, 30 minutes with the warm-up, so way shorter than I expected and then we just grabbed some lunch, they sat us down and going forward it will basically be coach Tomlin and the receiver coach will watch the film of the workout and watch some of the film from the CFL and get back to me and see if they think I will fit into their system.

“I’m hoping to hear from them some time in the next week or two, but you won’t hear, the public won’t hear anything until January. They are not allowed to sign me until, I think it’s January 3, and I’m going into my option year for the CFL so the window is the third of January, I believe it’s that day, until Feb. 15, so I have that month and a half to sign. So if anything happens it will be during that window.”

His message to nervous Roughriders fans
“I know people are sad that there’s a possibility of me leaving, but I do appreciate that you guys generally are happy for me and support me in whatever I’m doing. You know, Rider Nation is important to me and it always will be no matter what happens. It’s going to take a good opportunity for me to leave this place.”

Is he talking about an NFL physical or what you go through to get on an airplane?

We will probably pass and then watch as he becomes a Patriot and tears the league a new one. From the article he already sounds better then Randle EL, Sweed and Battle.
