    Default Carl Pavano?

Keep hearing rumblings that the #Pirates might jump in on Carl Pavano.

Dejan linked to Perrotto and had this to say:

"The Pirates have added two pitchers, Scott Olsen and Kevin Correia, this off-season. They may be interested in another -- Carl Pavano.

Pavano made $7 million in Minnesota last season, where he went 17-11 with a 3.25 ERA. He pitched 221 innings and had his lowest ERA since 2004 with the Marlins, when he went 18-8 with a 3.00 ERA. He joined the Yankees the next year and the wheels fell off -- he won nine games in three seasons and did not pitch in 2006 because of injuries.

He met with the Twins, Nationals and Brewers at the Winter Meetings and has said he wants to stay in Minnesota. Signing another player would force the Pirates to remove two players from the 40-man roster. They already need to take one off because of Correia's signing."

Pavano is older than dirt but he did have a good season last year. Problem is whether or not that was a legit or fluke season. At his age consistency isn't something you can rely on

Here is a link to Charlie's Pavano comments at bucdugout

    http://www.bucsdugout.com/

    And Tim's comments at PiratesProspects

    http://www.piratesprospects.com/2010...nvestment.html

Both bloggers bring up injury concerns. I am wondering if NH's vision is of Pavano putting up a good first half and then flipping him for a significant return at the trade deadline....??

The hope of Pavano replicating his numbers from last year and pretty high. I would assume that guys like him or Overbay etc... are flip types. If we can flip them we will. Anyone we bring in on 1 year contracts seem to have that feeling

any word on what we are doing to adrdess BP spots? Havent heard a lot

Pretty much. When the words "years and money are right" are mentioned that means "offer is lwoer than the agent wants"

@ Beertemple. Can't spell his name either?

I'm not sure what the thinking is with bringing in Pavano. Is it the same line of thinking being used in regards to Overbay? If Pavano produced like he did last year this would be a decent move but at his age and being a pitcher, that's tough to assume, more so than a position player IMO

    Difference between Overbay and Pavano:

Overbay was the best available 1B the Pirates could get..

    Pavano's not, IMHO.

True, although at this stage for pitchers, it's a crap shoot with a heavy emphasis on "crap". I don't think they consider Pavano early on and he's just someone that they decided to look at now.

I really don't see this going anywhere anyways.

You have a point. At this stage, it's going after Brandon Webb and hoping he's recovered, going after Pavano in hopes that 2010 wasn't him putting his best foot forward in hopes of cashing in on another fat payday like he did with the Yanks, or Jeremy Bonderman in hopes that he can finally live up to his promise.

Crap at a wall Kip.. Crap at a wall.

Pavano just cost 2 years and $16.5 million. The Twins better hope that Pavano at the ripe tender age of 35 does what he's never done before in his career - produce back to back good seasons. 12 season career and only 4 of those with an ERA under 4 and only 2 full seasons of under 4 era's

According to Colin Dunlop the Pirates made an offer to Pavano. I don't really know how to interrupt that. There is no way (and I wouldn’t want them to) they were going to pay Pavano anywhere near what he got from the Twins. Why even make an offer? It's like going into a car dealership an offering 10 thousand dollars for a 30 thousand dollar car. Ain”t happening….. why even make an offer? Maybe they were hoping for a miracle.

Jon Heyman from SI said that Pavano was seriously considering the offer the Pirates made because of how impressed he was by Clint Hurdle, but chose to stay with the winning team. I doubt he'd be interested if the offer wasn't at least in the same neighborhood, and likely even higher. I really can't see why he'd be in such demand, though. He's 35 and he's had about 1.5 good years in the last 6.
