    Default Season has exceeded expectations

    12/24/2010
    Season has exceeded expectations
    F. Dale Lolley

PITTSBURGH - At 11-4 after Thursday night's 27-3 shellacking of the Carolina Panthers at Heinz Field, the Steelers have pretty much overachieved this season.

Even the most feverent Steelers fan had to think 2010 would be a struggle after the team traded receiver Santonio Holmes and the NFL announced that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger would be suspended for the first six games.

Roethlisberger's suspension was later reduced to four games, but by that time, starting right tackle Willie Colon had been lost for the season to an Achilles' tendon.

And those were just the things that happened to the Steelers prior to the opening of training camp.

For most teams, they are the kind of issues that would lead to a losing season.

But somehow, through the trades, suspensions, injuries and everything else that has happened, the Steelers found a way to not only persevere, but thrive.

They went 3-1 without Roethlisberger and could have been 4-0 if not for a late rally by the Baltimore Ravens at Heinz Field.

They've overcome not only the loss of Colon, but of starting left tackle Max Starks as well.

They've held together, not only through the trade of Holmes, which was an unpopular move in the locker room, but the release of kicker Jeff Reed midway through the season. That was another transaction that was not well received by the players.

Thus far, no matter what the NFL, fate and coach Mike Tomlin has thrown at this group, they've responded by continuing to win football games. That's the sign of a veteran team that has been around long enough to not only trust in the front office - even if it doesn't always agree with the moves it makes - but the system in place and each other.

The ability to tune everything else out and continue playing winning football has the Steelers in position to not only win the AFC North Division with a victory in Cleveland on Jan. 2, but to also lock up a first-round bye in the AFC playoffs.

Again, you'd have been hard-pressed to find many people who thought both of those would be possibilities when this team played its first game this season.

But veterans such as linebacker James Farrior and wide receiver Hines Ward - two of the more outspoken and respected leaders - are not the only ones who deserve credit. A rookie class that includes standouts Maurkice Pouncey at center, emerging wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders and special-teams players Stevenson Sylvester, Antonio Brown and Jason Worilds has been a pleasant surprise.

It's all added up to a stellar season for most Steelers fans.

So sit back, enjoy the ride and see what happens in the postseason.

This is a team that has earned everything it has gotten. And next week, it will likely earn the No. 2 seed in the AFC playoffs.

What happens from there is all a bonus in what has been one of the more interesting seasons for the Steelers in recent memory.

Interesting that Lolley forgot to mention the ineptitude of our OC as a huge detraction, but still a great and positive article.

Yea, I liked the article as well... As for our OC, it could be said that we've "exceeded" for several years... LoL!

... You know, as this season was getting ready to begin, I remained a fan but wasn't too terribly optimistic due to what we were facing... I have been pleasantly suprised so far, and hope it continues.

I just saw a stat that said Tomlin has achieved the sixth best win total for a coach in his 4th year. Only 5 other coaches started with a better win total in the entire NFL history. Not bad. Not bad at all.

Who are the top 5? I would like to know how many acquired a team one year removed from the Super Bowl, a franchise QB and a future hall of fame defensive coordinator.

Not a bad job to walk into, not bad at all.

I dunno, the first quarter of the season definitely exceeded expectations given the circumstances. After that, I wouldn't say that given the overall talent that is still on this team.

Let's see what happens in the playoffs before saying the season has exceeded expectations. I mean, this team is one year removed from a SB with most of those players still on this team. It almost seems like that last line is typical Pittsburgh sports media propaganda. "Everything else is a bonus" Huh? I don't see it like that at all.

Unfortunately, too many Steeler fans are completely spoiled rotten. I really think we're too close and emotionally invested in the situation to see the bigger picture... Who cares that we are one year removed from the SB? Quite a few teams flat-out tank it after their SB runs... We're just ****ed lucky to be able to say that so frequently... What does "one year removed" have to do with Ben's issue?... What does "one year removed" have to do with the injury bug?... Yea, talented players are great as long as they're healthy and on the field, but that rarely happens for a complete season.

... If back on September 1st, someone told me that we'd be 11-4 right now and in line for the #2 seed, I'd say that they were seriously high on something...

NICE Ray!!! And I agree, look I said we'd be 7-9 this year, shows what the heck I know, and I am always glad to say "I was wrong" and they exceeded my expectations.

Because this team is STILL talented, which is my point in relation the SB. Yes, Steeler fans are spoiled, so what? I look at this team for what they are, which is a team with a good amount of talent in a league filled with mediocrity. If this team had average talent across the board it'd be a different story, IMO. Outside a couple areas, the FO does a great job for the most part in keeping the talent level high.

After factoring in questionable coaching, I'm not expecting a SB this year (of course it's possible and would be nice ) but it's definitely not expecting too much to expect at least one playoff win. Come on, Nky, it seems like you're eating up the pittsburgh sports media propaganda hook line and sinker. "Let's keep expectations low so fans won't ***** and moan and hope for some much needed changes."

I agree. This season has been a rollercoaster........ surviving Ben's suspension, injuries, surviving some crazy games - Miami, Buffalo, 1st Cincy game - which would have been losses last year....the re-match with the Ratbirds in Balt....but here we are in the playoffs, and on the verge of a 1st round bye........I'm sure Steeler fans have had their Xanax prescriptions filled more than once this season....

In my opinion, The problem is, the 1970's spoiled the fanbase.

and as time has passed, it must certainly be that teams like the 1978 great Steelers (14-2) surely must have rolled through all of its competition, the average scores had to be at least 30-10

    But it ain't so:
In fact the 2 losses both came to very good teams (Rams and Oilers)

and from week 8 to week 12 (a five week span) the almighty 1978 Steelers
Week 8 Lost at home to the Oilers
Week 9 barely beat a bad Chiefs (4-12) team 27-24 at home
    Week 10 barely beat a bad/average Saints (7-9)team 20-14 at home
Week 11 lost to the Rams 10-7 on the Road
Week 12 barely beat a bad (4-12) Bengals team by a score of 7-6 at home

But as time has elapsed, In my opinion, there is an unreal feeling of what those teams, accomplished. No denying they were great, but all I am saying is that there were tense moments in those games.

The legend/lore has created some crazy high expectations. Expectations that are nearly impossible to fufill. Expectations where some fans can't accept winning 2/5 past Super Bowl. Or making the playoffs 7/10 years or having just 1 losing season in ten can fill

No, not really... I honestly had serious doubts going into this season... There are always going to be "questionable" issues, and there will always be something to complain about... I have my "topics" that get under my skin each season, but I also realize that there is never going to be a "perfect season" in every aspect... I would argue that while you say the league is filled with mediocrity I say that we continue to exceede the norm BECAUSE of what we have and the way it's done... Multiple issues **** me off each and every week, but at the end of the day I would just rather take a positive attitude because it makes the season more enjoyable than complaining, that's all... I'd love to see some serious changes, and I have just as high expectations as you or any other Steelers fan, but I am also thankful and enjoy what we consistently produce.

I guess it's all in how one chooses to look at the whole picture...

Or maybe it's just the Holiday Season getting under my skin...
