    Default Updating Aaron Smith's progress

    Updating Aaron Smith's progress

    DEC 29
    By James Walker

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin offered some good news Wednesday on the rehabilitation of injured defensive end Aaron Smith.

The 12-year veteran, who had triceps surgery in October, has missed the past two months and is trying to make it back in time for the playoffs.

"He had a big workout this morning," Tomlin said on a conference call with the Cleveland media. "We fitted him for a brace, and that's arrived. And as soon as he gets medical clearance he's going to start the practice process, then, of course, ultimately to play.

"But his rehabilitation has been positive. It hasn't been any steps backwards. In fact, we've been pretty enthused and encouraged about his development."

No setbacks is good news for the Steelers. Smith is one of the NFL's most underrated players and a stalwart in Pittsburgh's 3-4 defense. Pittsburgh held a roster spot open all year for Smith in hopes that he could return in time to help with the team's postseason run.

The Steelers have a chance to clinch the AFC North division and a first-round bye Sunday with a victory over the Cleveland Browns. A win would give the Steelers two weeks to get key players such as Smith and Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu (Achilles) healthy.

I wonder, has anyone sat out this much of a season and done well when they've come back (in the same season)? "Healed" and "football ready" ... I hope in this case they are pretty much the same thing!

I think it depends on the position.

I think for a QB or WR or any position that relies alot on reaction and timing, the answer would be no. there's rust as soon as someone comes back and that rust can continue. there's always exceptions. For someone like ASmith that is a lineman and is more or less about strength/physicality more than timing and reactionary stuff I'd like to assume that he'd have an easier transition back

One that would have to limit his arm leverage since he had a biceps injury I believe??

not sure. Perhaps something that is more preventative in nature to keep the upper arm aligned?

Rod Woodson sat out all of 2005 and came back for the Super Bowl. He was tasked with covering Irvin and if I remember right Irvin had an OK day not a great day.

About Smith stepping in and picking up where he left off or to say at full steam. I think if they spell him with Hood and see how he does, groom him in there instead of just tossing in there cold turkey Smith, will do fine. Twelve year vet, his smarts, talents and desires he will do well.
To me that type of injury does seem to me to be one that would cause lots of strenght loss but then again, I'm just a bricklayer I'm not a doctor Jim !

    Woodson was retired in 2005.

In 1995 Woodson came back and primarily played nickle and dime and mostly as a safety. Carnell Lake made the switch to Woodson's CB spot. They weren't letting Woodson cover anyone of importance

Players seem to come back quicker these days due to medical advances, what Woodson did that season was completly unheard of at that time.

I thought that was a mistake to allow rod the start. Actually I really didn't know what to think at that time. I do remember when asked carnell Lake said it would have been easier if Rod did not play or step in as a starter because th chemistry, timing and being on the same page is huge to a secondary. Not me saying this, carnell lake.

Do you mean for the Browns game ? I really don't think (o'brother everytime i make a prediction i'm wrong) I really don't think the Steelers will lose the Browns game because Troy or Smith would not be in there.

I mean whenever Smith returns. I wouldn't make it a push to play the Browns, but if Smith can, he could use some work.
