Default NFL cuts Harrison's fine by $25,000

    Thursday, December 30, 2010
    Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The NFL has reduced the biggest fine it levied on Steelers linebacker James Harrison this season by one-third.

Harrison's fine was reduced from $75,000 to $50,000 for his hit on Cleveland wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi Oct. 17. Although Harrison lost his appeal, the NFL decided today to reduce the fine by $25,000.

"We're very pleased with the reduction and it's good step in the right direction," said Harrison's agent, Bill Parise.

Harrison was fined four times this season for $125,000, which now stands at $100,0000. Parise on Tuesday will appeal a $25,000 fine on Harrison for a hit in Buffalo Nov. 28.

In a statement, the NFL said tonight:

"We can confirm the outcome of those appeals. The fines of Dunta Robinson of the Atlanta Falcons and Brandon Meriwether of the New England Patriots for flagrant hits against defenseless receivers have been reduced on appeal. The appeals officer, Ted Cottrell, reduced Robinson's fine from $50,000 to $25,000 and Meriweather's fine from $50,000 to $40,000. Following these decisions, Cottrell took the additional step of reviewing the appeal of James Harrison of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Harrison was fined $75,000 earlier this season for a similar flagrant hit. Cottrell consulted with Commissioner Goodell about reducing Harrison's fine to $50,000 and the commissioner fully supported the decision. Cottrell said he reduced the fines because the players said they understood the rules and have made efforts to adjust their techniques to play within the rules that protect player safety."

Very true... But at least it IS a reduction on a previous fine... Is this setting a precedent?....

Now, no more stupid flags and fines on Harrison for being a great defensive football player.

I wish I could completely agree, but I cannot...

He's led with the helmet enough times to draw these flags, and while I do not like it, I understand it...

He just can't do that **** anymore... The league has changed whether we like it or not, so he must as well...

"how many of you received the memo from Goodell telling us that we need to call at least one personal foul penalty against James Harrison today?"

Further proof of the total incompetence of Goodell. Why was he fined in the first place? Why are the fines reduced? Huh? Just a total joke.

They're up to something......................This is probably the calm before the storm so when they toss Harrison out of the playoffs for touching a quarterback they, can fall back on this nice gesture.

    Cool pick Hawian !

There's no precedent with Goodell as Commish nor is there any consistency. To have either would eliminate the power that he has from instance to instance and that egotistical cumdrip has shown no desire of shrinkiing his ego or having it shrunk.

The positive is that there was a reduction which means that the NFL has finally shown a willingness to at least compromise when it feels like it and wants to. I wouldn't expect it to happen everytime or see much of a positive come forth most times

Incompetent Commissioners office and commissioner. They should have never fined him that kind of an amount. Inconsistent *****es that don't know what they are doing.

Do you think the fact he was picked to the pro bowl it might have had something to do with the reduction in the fine ?

No I don't. I just think the league knows that the 75k fine was way too much given what they fined other players for worse infractions than James' play that he was fined for. They are complete idiots that overreacted. Now they just admitted just how incompetent and wrong they were.

Absolutely....the dumbest thing about this is those idiots decline Harrison's appeal and then reduce it 25k now? Just a straight power trip from the get go... Hines was right, This is a maneuver by the league; they are only cracking down on hits so they can add two more games and they don't truly care about player safety. I firmly agree with Hines.
