Default Steelers sign six players to offseason roster

Steelers sign six players to offseason roster
    The National Football Post

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed six players to their offseason roster.

They signed the following players to reserve/future deals: linebackers Baraka Atkins and Mortty Ivy, running back James Johnson, offensive guard Nevin McCaskill, fullback/tight end Jamie McCoy and cornerback Donovan Warren.

The players are not eligible to practice or play for the Steelers or any team through the remainder of the 2010 season, but will join the Steelers officially after the Super Bowl.

Atkins played at Miami and was a 4th round pick by the Seahawks in 2007. Last time he actually played was in 2008, though he was on the 49ers roster for a game or two in 2009.

Ivy went to West Virginia and was undrafted in 2009. He was on the Panters practice squad in 2009 and the Rams practice squad in 2010. He's from Monroeville.

Johnson went to Kansas State and was undrafted in 2008. He got into a couple games at the end of the year and had 8 carries and 6 catches. He spent 2009 on the Bengals practice squad and 2010 on the Packers practice squad.

McCaskill went to Hampton and was undrafted in 2007. The Steelers are actually his 7th organization since then. He was on an active roster for a couple games in 2008, but has no NFL playing time.

McCoy went to Texas A&M. He was originally a QB, then a WR, then a TE, then a FB. He was undrafted in 2010, then was on and off the Rams practice squad through the season.

Warren went to Michigan, where he left after his junior season to enter the draft. He was told he'd be taken in the top 3 rounds, but went into the combine injured and ended up undrafted. He missed much of training camp with injuries as well. He spent a total of 1 day on the Jets practice squad before being cut.

Obviously these guys are never guys to get too excited about. The first 4 are probably guys you won't see much from ever. The last two are somewhat interesting at least. McCoy actually ran a 4.56 40 at his pro day after not being invited to the combine last year and seems pretty solid as a blocker. He could turn into a decent H-back type. Warren has a solid pedigree. He was a 5 star recruit out of high school, a 3 year starter at Michigan, and first team all Big 10 his junior year. Todd McShay had him as a second round pick at one point. He could still have some sort of NFL future if he can stay healthy.

They all sound like the typical playoff reserves for a little extra backup depth and practice simulation/competition. Definitely not players you ever want to have to use in a playoff game
