Listening to the fan all I heard he is practicing and no word has been officially given. They also said if he does play he won't be the starter or play the entire game.

Bouchett said, ( and I'm quickly becoming a non fan of this guy ) he believes Smith is being hung out in front of the team like a carrot by Mike Tomlin to motivate his players. Something to the affect, maybe the players will want to win even more knowing this might be the Super Bowl may be the only game that Smith can play after all his recovery time from the injury.
He said Tomlin is placing him on the teams shoulders as if he was Bettis and all the to do it was about getting Jerrome his SB ring, back to Detroit and all that.

I thought it was a stretch to have him come up with this scenario.

Point being, Hood isn't doing bad so why rush or take a chance of injury to Smith ?

Dale Lolley says he's going to be a full participant in practice this week. It's gonna take a full week of him blowing people up to be activated for this game. Ziggy has been great for us. Who would we deactivate on the D line to dress Smith this week? Big risk dressing him and hoping he doesn't get hurt early in the game IMO.

Thats what Im thinking. Ziggy has really stepped up at the end of the season. Assuming Smith is only 70% this week, I think id rather have a full game from Ziggy at 100% than Smith at 70%. Earlier in the season I would have said just the opposite.

Steelers DE Smith set to practice for first time since October

Steelers defensive end Aaron Smith will return to practice this week, coach Mike Tomlin announced Tuesday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Smith has been sidelined with a torn triceps since Oct. 24, but the Steelers didn't place him on season-ending injured reserve in the hopes that he would recover in time to help the team during the playoffs.

With the AFC Championship Game against the New York Jets just five days away, Tomlin said if Smith is active, he likely will play a limited number of downs.

"Snap count is probably going to be part of that discussion," Tomlin said, but he added that "it would be nice to add that tool to the toolbox."

A source with knowledge of the situation told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora last week that the Steelers might not have Smith back unless they reach the Super Bowl.

Smith has 44 sacks in his 12-year career, all with Pittsburgh.

Earlier this week, Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said injured starting defensive end Aaron Smith would return to practice to prepare for possibly playing in Sunday's AFC Championship Game.

On Wednesday night, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Smith likely will not play against the New York Jets. Smith, who has been sidelined because of a torn triceps since Oct. 24, was a limited participant in practice earlier in the day.

Smith, who is one of the league's elite 3-4 defensive ends, took part in some light conditioning Wednesday, according to the newspaper.

NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reported last week, citing a source with knowledge of the situation, that the Steelers probably had to reach the Super Bowl in order for Smith to play again this season.

The Steelers kept Smith, who is one of the team's most respected and popular players, on the active roster all season in hopes he would recover in time to help the team during the playoffs.

This is probably for the best. We cant afford to have Smith out there, even situationally if he isnt ready to go. Maybe the Steelers can use it as motivation to win, just to get Smith back for the Super Bowl.

It makes enough sense to hold Smitty out if Ziggy is doing well enough. Judging from the way Zigs played in the Rattards game, letting Smitty convalesce another week is not such a bad thing.
