PG exclusive: Steelers' Pouncey has broken bone in left ankle
    Thursday, January 27, 2011
By Gerry Dulac and Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey has a broken bone in his left ankle along with the previously-announced high ankle sprain. His status for Super Bowl XLV Feb. 6 remains highly doubtful.

Steelers sources say they have not yet ruled him out of the game against the Green Bay Packers, but a number of teammates remain privately skeptical that he will be healthy enough to play.

Both Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and Pouncey himself described the injury to the rookie Pro Bowler as a high ankle sprain, sustained on the opening drive of their 24-19 victory against the New York Jets in the AFC Championship game.

But, after further examination, it was determined Pouncey also has a broken bone in his ankle. His left foot and ankle were encased in a hard cast that replaced a walking boot. Pouncey has been using crutches to get around but has not been available to the media this week at the team's training facility.

Sources told the Post-Gazette that while there is a broken bone, damage to the ligaments in his ankle remains the major stumbling block for him.

Pouncey was injured when Jets linebacker Bryan Thomas fell on the back of his left leg after being shoved by right tackle Flozell Adams. The play came at the tail end of a Ben Roethlisberger pass to Hines Ward that carried seven yards to the Jets one.

Doug Legursky replaced Pouncey at center and the Steelers scored on the next play when Rashard Mendenhall ran 1 yards into the end zone. Legursky played the rest of the game and likely will start in the Super Bowl. His backup would be guard/tackle Trai Essex, who has played just about every position on the offensive line this season.

Pouncey and Adams were the only players on the offensive line to start every game this season.

If the Steelers can win this Super Bowl with three starting offensive linemen out, arguably the weakest part of this team,it will rank up with the greatest accomplishments ever of this storied franchise.

Completely agree. Even with Pouncey it was a hell of an accomplishment, without him... amazing. coming in, we'd be hard pressed to find an OL this lacking in talent and destroyed by injuries. Teams with the OL issues we've had all year don't goto the SB.

The irnoy is that we had some injury issues and such in 2008.

    Too True. Shame

    ----

what really sucks is that we should get an entire week+ of everyone saying we definitely have no chance because of our OL. I'm preparing for it now

I just hope they spend the next short two weeks preparing for Pouncy to be absent rather than sit around and hope he'll play.

This line was borderline mediocre with Pouncy in there, without him it could be a game changer.

From all of the reports coming out, Legursky has been assuming the starter role in practices and such. The nice thing is that since Pouncey isn't employed by the Packers, he can still have his photo taken with the team :

I agree, that the line is mediocre. Scott and Foster aren't starter quality guys and while I think Legursky could start somewhere, Center is a tough spot and this is a huge stage..

Like Keystoner said, all we can have is faith. Legursky DID come in against a good Jets defense and play extremely well and for the talent we have on this line, Sean Kugler has done a **** good job. Our Rushing numbers have fallen as the talent on the line has fallen to injuries but we still finished with a 4.1 YPC which is still decent (anything over 4.0 I consider good). We had 43 sacks against this year, we had 50 against last season.

Call me crazy but I have faith in Kugler and Legursky to turn up a respectable performance by the Line, we just can't expect too much. We can't but too much burden on the Offense. this line can't take it IMO. The Defense is going to have to play far better against good Passing teams than it has this season
