Pittsburgh brewer wants to supply president’s party

PITTSBURGH — When Scott Smith noticed that the White House had ordered beer from a Green Bay brewery for its Super Bowl party he thought, “Hey, that could be me.”

[IMGR]http://i55.tinypic.com/5dniti.jpg[/IMGR]So Smith, the owner of Pittsburgh’s East End Brewing, went through somewhat informal diplomatic channels — meaning he used Twitter — to offer his services on Thursday morning to the Obama administration as well.

As of Thursday evening, he hadn’t heard back from the White House, but he said he remains hopeful.

“There pretty much has to be a Pittsburgh beer there, too, right?” said Smith, whose 5-year-old brewery is in Pittsburgh’s Homewood section. “I mean, the president’s a Bears fan, and the Packers were pretty rough on them last weekend; I’m a little surprised that he would want any Green Bay beer there.”

The Wisconsin honors apparently went to Hinterland Brewing and Restaurant in Green Bay; that brewery’s owner told a Green Bay television station that the White House had ordered “several cases” of its pale ale and amber ale for Super Bowl Sunday.

Smith said if he were to get the call, he’d be sure to send styles that would bring some black and gold to the presidential beer coolers. He added that he would dig into his personal stash to send a couple bottles of Ugly American, a Belgian style Smith brewed a couple years ago; the label of that beer bears the unmistakable likeness of Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush, dressed in cowboy gear.

And if Barack Obama has yet to make up his mind about choosing a beer to represent the Steelers, Smith had some advice — stay away from Iron City, which is now brewed in Greensburg.

“We’d be a perfect choice, because we represent everything the president supports — we’re a small business, a green business,” Smith said. “Plus, our beer tastes a lot better.”

And if the call from Washington does come in?

“It would be a tremendous honor,” Smith said. “I wouldn’t even make him send the growlers back.”

East End Brewing gets Super boost from fans on Facebook
    By: Michael Pound
    Beaver County Times

PITTSBURGH — What started as one tweet to the White House has kept Scott Smith hopping ever since.

[IMGL]http://i52.tinypic.com/15zsiag.jpg[/IMGL]Smith, owner of Pittsburgh’s East End Brewing, read on Thursday that President Obama had apparently ordered beer from a brewery in Green Bay for his Super Bowl party. In an effort to make sure Pittsburgh was represented at the party as well, Smith sent a message to the White House via Twitter, volunteering the services of his brewery.

One day — and one story in The Times — later, Smith has a Facebook fan page supporting the effort and hundreds of tweets pushing the White House to bring some of Mister Smith’s beer to Washington.

“My phone started ringing (Friday) morning, and it hasn’t really stopped,” Smith said shortly after appearing on a Pittsburgh radio station Friday afternoon. “This has really taken on a life of its own.”

Smith said he had a friend help set up the Facebook fan page; by the afternoon nearly 300 people had signed up in support. And on Twitter, people using the hashtag #EastEndtoDC continued to send their pleas directly to the official White House Twitter account.

“I’m hoping someone in this expanding circle knows someone who knows someone, and we end up getting to the right person in the White House,” Smith said. “The Obama people seem to be pretty good with social media, so maybe we could get some attention that way, too.”

While his phone has continued to ring, Smith said he hasn’t yet gotten the call he’s waiting on.

“They can let me know next week,” he said. “I’ll drive the beer out there myself if I have to.”

In the initial article, he said that they're a "green" company.... Beyond that, I dunno....

It takes 17 times the volume of clean water to produce any given volume of beer in terms of cleaning, rinsing, maintenance, etc. That plus the energy in utilities needed to heat any given volumes of water to do the above chores, etc, etc etc. I only know that because I've spent a few years of my life brewing commercially. How on earth is that "green" ?
Not to mention the caustics and acids and various other chemicals that are discharged into the sewer system.

Oh I see. I didn't read the first article. Just the second one. I don't know how he would be green other than the fact he doesn't bottle. He has barley win in bottles but everything else is in casks and he sells growlers at the brewery.

I never realized that, so thanx for the insight. Guess I never thought about what went into the brewing process... But... I like my beer and need it... I guess I'm not a "green" person... LoL

I wouldn't qualify as green either but I'm conscious of it. I recycle and ****. Trying to do my part even if it's small.

Try it, he has taps in a **** load of bars in Pittsburgh now. Pretty much everywhere I go has something from him. I just saw here on the web site he has a growler shop open on the weekends in the strip. I need to get over there. Maybe this weekend even.
