Default MLB Rumors on Doumit's "Make or Break" Year

Kinda sez he has little value to MLB teams unless he proves he can still hit AND stay healthy

i cant wait till the media freaks the **** out because we are going to end up just flat out releasing him at some point, or he just becomes a free agent.

and unfortunately for him he lost his starting job and really is of little use to us to the point where he is unlikely to prove these things unless the Pirates are desperate to milk some C-level prospect for him.

I think he would be one of the best back-up catchers in mlb. Not that is saying much

He would be a good fit in the AL.

Or any team playing in Milwaukee in the 9th inning.

Haven't we discussed Doumit's perceived value ad nauseum for years? Even if Doumit has a great year (not likely BTW), his trade would be minimal at best. He's proved in his spotty MLB career that he's a plus offensive catcher from the left side. He's terrible with any glove on his hand at any position. He's below average offensively from 1st or the outfield.

He's at a point age wise, where what you see is what you get. The only thing of value the Pirates can hope to capture from a trade is some salary relief. If he's not one of the best 25 players during spring training, it may be time to cut their losses and move on. He's a clear liability behind the plate throwing out 12% of basestealers, not to mention too many passed balls.

I would much rather see Jones playing against righthanders in rightfield, and Overbay is going to play against righthanders at first. Doumit is strictly a left handed bat off the bench at this point that's making way too much money for what he can do.

If Doumit is a backup catcher, he's pretty much worthless. Unless the plan is to platoon him with Snyder. As a backup C, he's the last guy off the bench so his PA's are limited. If a team suddenly loses the starting C then Doumit could be an attractive trade option. But no one wants him in a backup role or apparently as a DH.

As I said on another thread, if the new manager can get Doumit to be comfortable in a new role--that of bench player/spot starter--and convince him that it's in his best interest to accept that role, and try to be good at it, then I think Doumit might actually produce a little this year, and gain a little value. Because of injuries, and also because of the way Russell used him, I think he has never been able to settle in to a comfort zone. My God, he was the friggin' cleanup hitter for awhile--how stupid was that?

I think we should just part ways. Whether by releasing him or trading him. To get rid of his contract, yeah, I'd tak a C level prospect.....or a nacho cheese warmer. If he blossoms somewhere else...so be it. I don't think there is a role on this team for him unless Snyder gets hurt.
