    Pouncey officially out for Sunday

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has told ESPN’s Suzy Kolber, via Adam Schefter, that rookie C Maurkice Pouncey did not practice today and will not play in Sunday’s Super Bowl.

This, of course, is not surprising, though Pouncey had been saying that he was 75 percent probable to play.

Kudos to him for continuing to believe that notion – if he did, in fact, believe it – even when it seemed clear that it was nearly going to be impossible for him to perform.

That means backup Doug Legursky will take over the center role and will be the man in charge of slowing down Green Bay’s B.J. Raji.

Pittsburgh Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey has been ruled out of Sunday's Super Bowl against the Green Bay Packers.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin told Pro Football Writers Association pool reporter Peter King that Pouncey is "out" after the team practiced Friday at Texas Christian University.

Earlier Friday, Tomlin had said Pouncey, who was voted to the Pro Bowl as a rookie this season, would have to practice in order to play.

"I'll let you know when we practice," Tomlin said. "I'm sure he's over there working, trying to prepare himself."

Pouncey hadn't practiced for two weeks since sustaining a high left ankle sprain.

Backup center Doug Legursky will replace Pouncey, as he did in the AFC Championship Game victory over the New York Jets. Legursky, a second-year pro, has started four games at guard this season but none at center.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said before the news was announced that his team wasn't focused on whether Pouncey or Legursky plays.

"We're preparing for their offense," McCarthy said. "I don't think their protection schemes or offense will change depending on who plays center.

"(Quarterback) Ben Roethlisberger is going to make that offense go."

King also reported the Steelers have declared starting defensive end Aaron Smith out for the game. Smith hasn't played since Week 7 because of a triceps injury.

A healthy Legursky is better than a crippled Pouncey.

It's a bummer Pouncey is hurt but not the end of the world. Gonna have to run Mendenhal behind Flozell more often than behind the center plays.

Who is really surprised? There was no chance and the 75% estimate from Pouncey was just an inexperienced rookie's unrealistic optimism. I think the Steelers will hold his job for him next year.

    Steelers' Maurkice Pouncey ruled out

DALLAS -- Maurkice Pouncey is sidelined for the Super Bowl.

The Pittsburgh Steelers center has a high left ankle sprain that has kept him out of practice since he was injured nearly two weeks ago in the AFC championship game. Now, the rookie Pro Bowl selection will miss the big game against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

"He's out," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin told a pool reporter Friday after the team completed its final full practice indoors at TCU.

Backup Doug Legursky will play in his place in what will be his first NFL start as a center. Signed as an undrafted free agent out of Marshall in 2008, Legursky started four games at guard earlier this season.

"The NFL is made up of lots of players like him: guys who somehow got an opportunity and seized it," Tomlin said. "We're completely confident that he will seize this opportunity and play well. That's why we're not changing what we do."

Pouncey needed crutches and wore a walking boot on his left foot as he got off the team plane in Dallas on Monday, but didn't need either during the players' final media session Thursday. Tomlin said earlier Friday that the rookie Pro Bowl selection would not play if he could not participate in the team's last practice.

Defensive end Aaron Smith also is out. He's been sidelined since Oct. 24 with a torn triceps muscle and has been limited in practice.

The Packers' main concern is outside linebacker Erik Walden, who was listed as questionable with an ankle injury.

Wide receiver Donald Driver tweaked his quadriceps this week and has been limited in practice, but Packers coach Mike McCarthy said earlier Friday that Driver is expected to play. He is listed as probable.

Meanwhile, the Steelers practiced with crowd noise piped in for the first time this week.

"We've had a very good practice week, very normal," Tomlin said. "We're lucky to have guys who just love football and love one another. It's a special group."

Steelers place Pouncey on IR, sign guard off practice squad

    By Scott Brown, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Saturday, February 5, 2011

The Steelers have placed center Maurkice Pouncey on injured reserve and signed guard Dorian Brooks to their 53-man roster.

Pouncey started every game this season but the Steelers ruled him out for the Super Bowl because of a high ankle sprain.

The 6-2, 306-pound Brooks has been on the Steelers’ practice squad all season. He signed with the team last April as an undrafted free agent out of James Madison.

The Pittsburgh Steelers placed ailing center Maurkice Pouncey on injured reserve on Saturday, one day after ruling him out of action for Super Bowl XLV.

[HIGH-LIGHT]The team added offensive lineman Dorian Brooks to the roster from the practice squad to take Pouncey's spot.

Brooks will likely back up center Doug Legursky, pressed into a starting role in relief of Pouncey.

Pouncey suffered a high ankle sprain in the AFC title game, but did not recover in time to practice in Super Bowl week.

The Steelers went through their final practice on Saturday before playing the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

Coach Mike Tomlin invited families and special guests into the indoor facility at TCU where the Steelers worked out.

He told pool reporter Calvin Watkins he was happy to bring the extra bodies into practice.

"We had to get some work done today and nothing outside of the white lines was normal," Tomlin said, "but let's face it, nothing tomorrow night outside the white lines is going to be normal."

Defenseive end Aaron Smith (triceps) still is not expected to play on Sunday.

    Dorian Brooks

    Height:6'2"
    Weight:306 lbs.
    Arm Length:33 3/4 in.
    Hand Size:10 in.
    College:James Madison
    Conference:Colonial

Brooks is an excellent small-school offensive lineman who made the transition from defensive line to offense and found a lot of success. He was a productive performer for James Madison , starting all 38 games in his final three seasons. He is a good athlete who does a good job of keeping his pad level down and his weight over his feet, but there are times when he can simply be overpowered by big interior linemen. He understands angles and does a good job of using his hands to control and steer opponents but needs to develop more lower body strength if he wants to succeed at the next level.
