Just heard this on the fan. Very sad day for Pittsburgh. Share your thoughts about the Pirates last world champion manager.

Very sad news. Chuck Tanner was such a positive person, and his love of the game came through with every word he spoke. R.I.P to the leader of the "family"

Oh boy. Chuck was as classy a person as you will ever find. I grew up across the street from him. Graduated with his oldest son. Years later when visiting NC, I ran into him and still remembered who I was. Sad day for for Western PA. R.I.P Mr. Tanner.

Tanner was still very much involved with the Pirates, especially during spring training each year. The team actually credited a fiery speech from Tanner as one of the reasons they decided to go forward with Ryan Doumit instead of Ronny Paulino in 2008.

Sad to hear without a doubt.... Chuck was the man...

... Back in 1980 I was part of a group that took a tour of Three Rivers... It was a perfect time to be there, as we were the city of Champions... Well, as we took the tour through the stadium and made our way out onto the field, Mr. Tanner greeted us all by the dugout... He stayed and answered every single question and signed every single autograph... One very class act...

It would be nice if the MLB Network or ESPN Classic would replay game 7 of the 1979 World Series in honor of him. Unfortunately, I was just a little too young to remember that 1979 team and only got to see Chuck manage some of the bad teams of the 80s before he was eventually let go. I never met the man and wish I had. I've already heard a lot of stories today about what a great guy he was and how accommodating he was to his players and the people of Pittsburgh.

From everything I've read and heard about him, I wished I had met him. I would imagine that there were very few people who weren't better off after having met and talked with him.

    What a great, great man.

"Tanner's irrepressible faith was tested in the '79 Series when Pittsburgh fell behind favored Baltimore 3-1. Facing possible elimination in Game 5 in Pittsburgh, Tanner awoke to learn his mother had died in a nursing home in New Castle.

Saying his mother would have wanted him to do his job, Tanner stayed with his team and took a huge gamble by starting left-hander Jim Rooker, who had won four games all season, rather than future Hall of Famer Bert Blyleven. Rooker held the Orioles to one run over five innings, and the Pirates, led by aging star Willie Stargell, went on to sweep the final three games."

This from an AP story......Boy, I remember that.....doesn't seem all that long ago. God bless, Chuck.

Kind of weird that there are conflicting reports on his age. All of the baseball websites (and Wikipedia) have him listed as 81, but the newspaper reports are coming out saying he was 82. I guess everyone has been listing the wrong birth date for years now.

When I first looked it up, before starting this thread, the different sites I looked at said he was born July 4, 1929. That's why I said 81. Now, Wikipedia says he was born July 4, 1928 (earlier it said 1929) while some other sites still say 1929. Strange.
