Sort of a snub on Meek isn't it? Why Biemel as the setup guy?

Oops, sorry missed a line in the article, Meek named right handed setup man. I guess they like having the options.

Ahh, that makes sense then. Guess if I would have read the article, I'd have seen that.

looking at Beimels quick splits he is just a left handed specialist, his ave against lefties is a full .100 points lower so is his OBP and his strikeout rate is twice as high against lefties. So being a veteran left specialist i can only assume he is named as a setup man as a nod for his experience and tenure as a bullpen guy.

Beimel was brought in purely to work lefties late in games, so this isn't much of a surprise. the irony is that we brought in lefty Javier Lopez as a our "Lefty specialist" and his splits were far better against righties. Beimel gives us another strong option against left handed hitters

As for setting up, i'm not sure why they need to split. Meek was actually better against lefties last season than he was against righties. He was good against both but better against lefties

the one I'd be watching is Hanrahan. Good stats last year against both lefties and righties, but he was far more dominant against righties. Lefties he had to work a little harder at. not much of a concern and it looks like we have a nice end 3 right now. Not sure it's as strong as last years end 4, since we have no clue who else has a job besides Meek, Hanrahan and Beimel right now in the pen

Looks like it will be a solid back end of the bullpen. It would be great if our starters can go deeper into games so as not to wear our bullpen out by july.

That's a nice title but I hope he has more work than the Maytag repairman.

Believe it or not, as a closer for the usual Pirates (anywhere between 57-72 wins) a closer can notch 25+ saves. they'll find these guys innings even in no closer roles to keep them fresh.

    Yeah I know.

Unless you have a dominant guy I don't see the sense in naming a closer but I'm in the minority on that for sure.

I think part of the reasoning behind this decision is the fact that Hanrahan will be a FA sooner and therefore more likely to be traded. As his free agency draws closer, the Bucs my opt to trade him since they have Meek to step in. Hanrahan will have more value as closer than he would as a setup guy.
